Among the Igbos of the southern part of Nigeria,not all chickens and colors are used for rituals. These chickens must be local or indigenous chickens and their colors must align with the purpose of the ritual as would be recommended by the traditional chief priest (Dibia) or the native doctor.
The purpose for different ritual performances may be for;
• Thanksgiving in appreciation for prayers answered by the diety or request granted
• Cleansing,done when one feels or accused of desecrating the land or abusing a titled elder or commiting an abominable act.
• Request for favors which may be to find a good job,conception,husband,wife,cars etc
• Wickedness,this type is common,done to kill an enemy or innocent person, to cause confusion in peoples lives and families,to break peoples homes,marriage,cause stillbirth in pregnant women etc.
Of all these purposes, individuals chose for themselves which they want to perform,the Dibia only carries out instructions. Although sometimes,the Dibia warns of the repercussions of any wicked act melted on innocent individuals.
