Marek's disease is a highly contagious disease caused by Gallic herpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2) in chicken. Mobility is 10-50% and mortality up to 100%. Quail and turkeys are also infected with the disease.
Transmission
Mature virus can be found in the follicle epithelium from where they are released into the environment and infect via the respiratory tract. The viruses can survive in feces and litter for as long as 65weeks. The infected chickens becomes virus carriers.
Chickens infected with Marek's are more susceptible to other diseases caused by parasites, coccidiosis and bacterial diseases.
Clinical signs
• Paralysis of legs
• Legs splayed out
• One leg extended forward and one backward
• Wing and neck paralysis
• Grey iris or irregular pupil
• Impaired vision
• Loss of weight
• Enlarged and roughened skin around feather follicles
Prevention
1. Vaccination in the best prevention method
2. Apply all-in/all-out production
3. Clean up tools after each flock is removed
4. Routinely disinfect the chicken house once a week.
5. Use vitamins and electrolytes to strengthen resistance to weather changes
