1. HAND MATING
This involves bringing the sow to be mated to the chosen boar for mating under the supervision of the farm keeper.
Importance of Hand Mating
• It allows the farmer to record the exact breeding date
• There's an assurance that the sow/gilt has been bred
• Information on the breeding performance of the boar is known
• It allows heavy boars to breed gilts and young boars to breed mature sows

2. PEN MATING
This method involves allowing active boars to mingle with the sows to be mated. In this method, successful mating can not be ascertained easily as there's no supervision of the mating.
This method can be carried out in two forms;
• Divide the gilt or sow herds to allow a mating ratio of 1:10 (one boar to pen mate ten sows/gilt) or 1:12
• Rotate or alternate the boars in alternate base among the gilt and sows i.e. one or a set of boars for the gilt herd for one day and switch over to the sows
